The Preliminary Round of play at the Pan American Cup has concluded and with Thursday deemed a day off, it is a perfect time to reflect on the top performances of the last week.
Heidy Casanova of Cuba and American Liz McMahon were the top individual match scorers with 27 points apiece. Casanova’s tally came in a sweep of Chile on Monday, while McMahon grabbed her points total in a five-set battle with Puerto Rico the same day.
Jennifer Cross of Canada boasted the best blocking effort of the tournament, turning in a match-high seven stuffs against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday.
From the service line, American Micha Hancock left no doubt who owned the top spot, racking up the top two efforts of the week, with 11 aces against Venezuela and eight against Columbia.
On the blocking front, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago each managed 16 stuffs to lead the top team efforts. Canada’s block party came against Trinidad and Tobago, while T&T in turn did the same to Peru the following day.
Two of the top seven blocking efforts belonged to the United States, with 14 vs. Puerto Rico and 13 vs. Venezuela.
The United States also led the top service games with 15 aces against Venezuela. Argentina also managed 15 aces against Venezuela to tie for the top serving spot.
For the week, the top scorers were: Mexico’s Andrea Rangel (94), Casanova (90) and Puerto Rico’s Daly Santana (81). Santana’s scoring is all the more impressive since she did not play in her team’s final contest.
Kill leaders were: Rangel and Casanova, 86 points apiece, followed by Peru’s Angela Leyva (68).
From the service line, Hancock was the scorer with 25 aces. Santana registered 13 and Argentina’s Paula Yamila Nizetich added 11.
On the block, Argentina’s Natalia Aispurua and Trinidad & Tobago’s Sinead Jack led the way with 16 stuffs apiece. Peru’s Clarivett Yllescas followed with 14.
