After only a semester with Modena, Mina Tomic has decided to part ways with the A1 club to sign with A2’s Bartoccini Jewelers Perugia, according to to the team’s official website. Allegedly, she was discontent with her lack of playing time in Modena.
Despite her young age, 24-year-old Tomic has been playing professional volleyball for almost 10 years. Before Modena, she started her professional career in her home-country of Serbia, winning two straights Serbian Championships and Cups, which grabbed the attention of a lot of foreign teams. She then signed with Ukraine’s Khimik Yuzhny and won 4 straight Ukrainian Championships and Cups in the four seasons she was with the squad.
Indeed, having been acostumed to the limelight, it must have been very tough to be relegated to Modena‘s bench. However, the Italian league is much tougher than any other competition she ever faced in Serbia or Ukraine, and a move to lower-tier A2 may help her develop her skills at a much fairer pace.
Here are excerpts from an interview she gave to Legavolleyfemmnile.com about her transfer:
“Why did you choose Perugia?
I decided to come here because I think it’s the right place to show off my qualities as a player. In Modena, unfortunately, I did not have many opportunities to play. I, on the other hand, am hungry to be on the court, and for this I thank Perugia for giving me the opportunity.
What do you expect from this new adventure?
To work a lot together with my companions, because to get to important results we must be a united group. I am convinced together we will be able to achieve the results our team expects.
What do you promise your new fans in Perugia?
Effort and a lot of work on the field. I’ve seen a few matches in Perugia and I think it’s a good team. I hope to be able to give, together with my new friends, some satisfaction to the Perugian public that follows us with passion.”
Perugia is currently in 14th place on A2’s standings with a 5-14 record.
