Background

Maritza Plovdiv continued its demolishing seasons-long run through the Bulgarian Championship by claiming its 4th consecutive national title. In doing so, along the way, it brought its winning streak in the tournament to 57 victories in a row. This edition’s victim was Levski Sofia, who fell in two games, the last in 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-23). With the title win, Maritza earned the right to represent Bulgaria at the 2018-19 Cev Champions league.

Story

Desi Nikolova, who is in her first year with Maritza, celebrated the title with joy. However, on an interview given right after the game, she complained heavily about the refereeing against her team during the playoffs. Her words were harsh, and may even win her a fine from league officials (Sportal.bg):

“Winning the title is a pleasant feeling. Although, it was hard, having to play against the referees as well as Levksi. For us this is quite insulting, unacceptable, it is really not right at all. We have proven ourselves as players with class, we didn’t deserve this treatment.

As for our season, we managed to win the Bulgarian Cup, domestic title, and to play the final round of the Champions League. We did not advance in the latter, but it was the first time a Bulgarian team played in the most prestigious tournament in Europe. No other team has ever done this in Bulgaria. Yes, we are satisfied, we did a very good season.”
