January 18 Recap: Ohio State Defeats USC and UCLA Stuns Penn State

#7 OSU DEF. #14 USC 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21)

LOS ANGELES, Calif.– Ohio State defeated USC on Thursday night on the first day of the AVCA Showcase at Pauley Pavilion. This is USC’s third straight loss.

Ohio State setter, Sanil Thomas, ran the offense for the Buckeyes with 44 assists and three digs. Nicolas Szerszen led the team in kills, putting away 17 balls with two errors on an .517 clip and scooping up six digs. Martin Lallemand also had an impressive offensive performance with 11 kills on 21 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. The team posted 9.5 blocks.

Jack Wyett fueled the USC offense with 18 kills. He was fed by setter, Chris Hall, who recorded 39 assists. Hall and Matt Douglas led the team in digs with seven a piece.

#13 GCU DEF. NJIT 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-14)

PHOENIX– GCU swept NJIT on Thursday in the Lopes’ home opener. This is their best start in program history.

GCU setter, Puna Kaniho, ran the offense for the Lopes with 29 assists. Cody Williams and Shalev Saada led the team in kills, putting away 10 balls a piece. The team posted 9.5 blocks.

Raymond Kowalski fueled the NJIT offense with 9 kills. He was fed by setter, Ricardo Whitaker, who recorded 23 assists. The team posted 18 digs and eight blocks.

MCKENDREE DEF. LINDENWOOD 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17)

ST. CHARLES, Mo.– McKendree defeated Lindenwood on Thursday in Hyland Arena. This was the first MIVA matchup for the two teams in the 2018 season

McKendree setter, Pasquale Fiduccia, ran the offense for the Warriors with 21 assists. Brendan Schmidt led the team in kills, putting away 9 balls on a .538 clip. The team posted 10.5 blocks.

Nathan Van Dellen fueled the Barton offense with 7 kills. He was fed by setter, Adam Brewster, who recorded 28 assists. The team posted 26 digs on the night, with Ryan Vorderer accounting for 12 of them.

KING DEF. ABU 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-14)

BRISTOL, Tenn.– King swept ABU on Thursday at King University. ABU remains winless.

King setter, Nick Drooker, ran the offense for the Tornado with 27 assists. Kiel Bell led the team in kills, putting away 11 balls on a .304 clip. The team posted seven blocks.

Myles Miller fueled the ABU offense with 5 kills. He was fed by setter, Moses Kresch, who recorded 11 assists. The team posted 26 digs and two blocks.

#2 UCLA DEF. #9 PENN STATE 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22)

LOS ANGELES, Calif.– UCLA defeated Penn State on Thursday night on the first day of the AVCA Showcase at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins remain undefeated.

UCLA setter, Micah Ma’a, ran the offense for the Bruins with 42 assists and six digs. Christian Hessenauer led the team in kills, putting away 11 balls with five errors on an .250 clip and scooping up three digs. Daenan Gyimah also had an impressive offensive performance with eight kills and zero errors for an .800 hitting percentage. The team posted 11.5 blocks.

Aidan Albrecht fueled the Penn State offense with 13 kills. He was fed by setter, Luke Braswell, who recorded 32 assists. Matthew McLaren led the team in digs with six.
