DENTON, Texas – Carrie Gurnell is the newest addition to the Mean Green women’s volleyball staff, as the Katy, Texas, native was named an assistant coach on Wednesday.
Gurnell, who spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb, replaces Carnae Dillard on the staff.
“I’m excited for Carrie to join our volleyball family,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “She stood out during the search process and did a great job of articulating how she can contribute to our continued success. She has played at a high level, so she understands the commitment and work ethic needed to sustain the level of success we expect here at North Texas. She will be a great mentor for our players as we work toward building champions and preparing leaders.”
Gurnell starred collegiately at Purdue, where she started 127 matches and notching more than 1,000 kills as a four-year starter. The outside hitter racked up double-digit kills in 50 matches.
After completing her Boilermaker career, the Cinco Ranch High School alumna and two-time all-state honoree played professionally for three seasons in Austria with Volleyball Club Tirol in Innsbruck.
Gurnell began her coaching career in the camp and club ranks, including eight years in the junior club circuit and two years in the Austrian public school system.
“I’m excited to get back to Texas in general and to be at a university that’s growing,” Gurnell said. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the growth and the excitement people have about the athletics program, especially with the volleyball team.”
North Texas went 29-4 in 2017, including the first regular season Conference USA title in program history.
