Lauren Carlini Named Big Ten Medal of Honor Recipient

Graduating University of Wisconsin volleyball player Lauren Carlini has been named one of the school’s two recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The award is given annually to two student-athletes in each Big Ten school’s graduating class, one male and one female to recognize the combination of excellence in both athletics and academics. The award was the first of its kind in collegiate athletics to recognize this combination, having been given out every year since 1915.

Carlini, who recently also became the first volleyball player in history to win the prestigious AAU Sullivan award, was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, which advanced to Academic All-American in 2016. She will graduate in May with a degree in retailing and consumer behavior, with a certificate in entrepreneurship.

On the court, she set Wisconsin to at least the Elite 8 (national quarterfinals), including the national championship game in 2013. She was named a 4-time AVCA All-America award winner.

The honor was announced on Monday at Wisconsin’s annual Buckinghams Awards ceremony held in downtown Madison. Among other volleyball award winners were Haleigh Nelson, who received the Unsung Hero award. That award recognizes two athletes who “displays hard work, positive attitude and determination in athletics, the classroom, as well as the community – nominated by coaches, then voted on by student-athlete population.”

Julia Saunders was recognized as a Chi Alpha Sigma honoree, a member of the national student-athlete honor society; and Sarah Dodd received the Impact Award for volleyball as having earned the most community service hours of anybody on the team.
