UCSB Asics Invitational

  • January 4-6, 2017
  • Santa Barbara, California

The Asics Invitational was packed with action including 11 matches on two courts and a field including five Top 20 squads.

No. 13 Cal State Northridge went 3-0 at the event for the second straight year, notching wins over Saint Francis, NJIT and Princeton. Opposite Arvis Greene, who was CSUN’s first All-American since 2010, starred in all three matches, tallying 39 kills and 10 aces across the three wins.

No. 2 Long Beach State also exited the tournament unscathed with a trio of victories, downing Princeton, NJIT and Saint Francis to move to 4-0 on the season. The 49ers roster features 11 returning players including 2017 AVCA Player of the Year TJ DeFalco. DeFalco notched 34 kills on the weekend, leaving him just three shy of  1,000 career kills.

It was a mixed bag of results for the remainder of the seven teams in the field, with the exception of No. 6 Stanford and NJIT, which both went winless.

No. 6 Stanford struggled to find its footing, falling to Saint Francis (3-1), Princeton (3-2) and against host UCSB (3-0).

NJIT was outdone by UCSB (3-1), Cal State Northridge (3-0) and Long Beach State (3-1)
