Lucena/Dalhausser Take Down Cerutti/Schmidt To Advance To Semis

2017 FIVB WORLD TOUR SEASON OPENER

The men’s quarterfinals of the Fort Lauderdale Major welcomed in three Brazilian and American squads, plus Polish and Italian duos. Exiting the quarterfinals, entering the semifinals are two Brazilian and American squads.

Evandro/Andre Loyola (BRA) def. Gibb/Crabb (USA)

  • Score: 2-0, (21-19, 21-17)

To start off the quarterfinals, Brazilian pair of Evandro/Andre Loyola took a quick two set match over American duo Gibb/Crabb. The first set was a tight battle, ending in a close 21-19 score. The second was slightly easier, ending in 21-17, but non-the-less a challenge, making their way into the semifinals.

Alvaro Filho/Saymon Barbosa (BRA) def. Fijalek/Bryl (POL)

  • Score: 2-0, (21-14, 21-17)

Filho/Barbosa had it easy in the quarterfinals, taking down Polish squad Fijalek/Bryl in a two set match up. The first set was pure ease, as the Brazilians took the first half of the match 21-14, followed up with a quick 21-17 second set to take the match, advancing to the semifinals.

Hyden/Doherty (USA) def. Lupo/Nicolai (ITA)

  • Score: 2-1, (12-21, 21-19, 15-11)

After dropping the first set by a large margin of 21-12, the American duo of Hyden/Doherty made a comeback to take the match in three sets. The second set was a close battle, but the American’s pushed forward, winning by a score of 21-19. During the third and deciding set, the American squad proved their worthiness in the tournament with a 15-11 win, earning a spot in the semifinals.

Lucena/Dalhausser (USA) def. Cerutti/Schmidt (BRA)

  •  Score: 2-1, (13-21, 21-17, 15-10)

In an exciting exit to the men’s quarterfinals, American pair of Lucena/Dalhausser prevailed to take down the reigning Olympic champions of Cerutti/Schmidt in a three set test.

After dropping the first set 13-21, the American’s had to really push back in order to stay in the match – and tournament. They did just that. Lucena/Dalhausser bounced back to take the second set 21-17, sending the match into a deciding third set. Sealing their fate in the semifinals, thefinal point of the match ended with a Dalhausser stuff, straight to the sand with no chance of the Brazilians to recover.
