Mexico Grabs First Pan Am Cup Win, Takes 11th

Mexico 3, Chile 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17)

Mexico garnered its first win of the Pan American Cup on Saturday, defeating Chile via sweep for 11th place in the tournament. Mexico ends the tournament 1-5, while Chile wraps up the event 0-6.

Chilean captain Catalina Melo scored a match-high 15 points, but it was not enough to lift her squad to victory.

The Mexicans outdid Chile in every other statistical category: boasting a 40-25 margin in kills, a 9-3 lead in blocks and 6-5 lead in aces.

Kathya Garcia and Andrea Rangel paced the Mexican attack with 12 points apiece, each turning in 10 kills. Garcia also posted two aces. Patricia Valle added nine points, with a match-best four blocks.

Melo’s only help came from Beatriz Novoa, who added nine points, with seven kills and two aces.
