Middle Tennessee’s Mason Leads Conference USA’s Week 9 Award Winners

IRVING, Texas – Middle Tennessee rattled off back-to-back sweeps for the first time in three years with the offensive prowess of Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week Bailey Mason. North Texas notched its first win at WKU in program history as Jordyn Williams took home Defensive Player of the Week and Rhett Robinson won Freshman of the Week. Setter of the Week went to Florida Atlantic’s talented Ivone Martinez for the fifth time this season. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World Headwear.

Offensive Player of the Week

Bailey Mason, Middle Tennessee, Sr., Forsyth, Ill.
Middle Tennessee reeled off back-to-back sweeps in conference action for the first time since 2015 this weekend with the help of a hot hand from Mason. The senior swung 32 kills on a .389 clip in three-set victories over UAB and UTEP. Against the Blazers, Mason powered 17 kills on a .400 hitting percentage to pair with two aces, five digs and 19.5 points. The Illinois native turned to UTEP and tied her season-best three aces with 15 kills, six digs and two blocks.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jordyn Williams, North Texas, Sr., San Antonio, Texas
Williams showcased a stout defense through North Texas’ 2-0 weekend in C-USA play. The Mean Green swept WKU to earn the program’s first win in Bowling Green as Williams was a force at the net, manufacturing five blocks with two digs and seven kills in 10 attempts. North Texas traveled to UAB and forced the Blazers to five sets with Williams’ presence felt at the net once again. She compiled six blocks and chipped in offensively with 12 kills. On the weekend, Williams averaged 1.38 blocks, 3.12 points and 2.38 kills per set.

Setter of the Week

Ivone Martinez, Florida Atlantic, Sr., Mexicali, Mexico
Martinez captured her fifth weekly setting award of the season following another productive weekend for the Owls. On Friday, the senior lifted 57 assists, nine digs, three kills and four blocks against Southern Miss. The setter facilitated the Florida Atlantic offense to a .297 team hitting percentage. The Mexico product matched her assist number on Sunday, grabbing 57 helpers and combining those with 14 digs for her 31st-career double-double. Martinez averaged 12.67 assists per set with 2.56 digs per set.

Freshman of the Week

Rhett Robinson, North Texas, Fr., Krum, Texas
Robinson stood firm against a tough test in WKU over the weekend, registering six blocks and seven kills at a .455 efficiency to help lock in the sweep of the Lady Toppers. Robinson and the Mean Green faced UAB on Sunday, where the freshman downed another 19 kills with three blocks and six digs. Robinson took home the conference’s weekly freshman honor for the second time with her 3.25 kills, 1.12 blocks and 2.88 points per set through eight sets.
