Former national team captain Milagros Cabral of the Dominican Republic will be part of the nation’s 2017 Sport Hall of Fame class alongside nine other athletes and sport personalities in October.
Cabral, an outside hitter, was a member of the women’s national team from 1998 through her retirement following the 2012 Olympics.
The Santo Domingo native, represented the DR at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics and also helped the team to a gold at the 2003 Pan American Games, 2009 NORCECA Championship, and 2008 and 2010 Pan American Cup.
Cabral made four World Championship appearances with the national team: 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010.
Her first year with the senior national team (1998), the Dominican Republic won silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games. The team went on grab gold medals at the event in 2002, 2006 and 2010, with Cabral bringing home MVP honors in 2002.
Cabral was named Athlete of the Decade by the newspaper Hoy in 2009.
In the club ranks, Cabral played has played for 12 different teams since 1995, including her current team: Pinkin de Corozal in Puerto Rico.
Other notable members of the 2017 class of inductees are Luis Castillo, from the 1997 Florida Marlins World Series team, and pitcher Jose Lima, who played or the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.
