Italian second division club Millenium Brescia has surprised volleyball fans by announcing in its official website the signing of 41-year-old Italian volleyball legend Simona Gioli. With over 300 caps for the Italian national team, Gioli is wildly considered one of the best middle blockers to ever wear the blue and white jersey.
Gioli was a member of the Italian Women’s National Teams that won gold medals at the 2009 FIVB Grand Champions Cup (MVP), the CEV 2007 and 2009 European Championships, and the 2007 (MVP) and 2011 FIVB World Cups. At the club level, she has played for many international teams, most notably winning the the 2006-07 CEV Cup (MVP) and 2007-08 CEV Champions League (MVP) with Perugia.
Here is what she had to say of her new home during her official presentation:
“I am really motivated and I really like this team. I’m very excited to see so many people. I thank the sponsors and the company for the opportunity given to me. It is not easy to integrate into a team already enjoying great chemistry and that is playing very well. I am very motivated to give my contribution and my experience to the group. Good luck to us!”
Millenium’s general management is likewise very proud of what they accomplished by signing her:
“In these months our goal has been to create a show for the public of Montichiari. In the last championship matches, fans and sponsors stopped me to tell me that they had fun and appreciated what they saw: this can only make me proud as president. We are playing at excellent levels and being back on the market has been a necessity. It’s a great pleasure to have players like Simona wear our pink jersey. She will help us grow in all levels.”
Millenium Brescia currently sits in 5th place of A2’s standings with a 15-6 record.
