MiraCosta College won its first state championship May 5, taking home the 2017 California Community College Beach Volleyball title. The Spartans won the championship with three straight victories over Long Beach City College, Grossmont College, and Feather River College.
MiraCosta entered the competition as the top seed and defeated fourth-seeded Long Beach City 4-1, before edging Grossmont 3-2. The Spartans secured the title with a 3-0 win over Feather River.
“It feels unbelievable,” said elated head coach Doug Wright. “To get here and have the year we’ve had feels unbelievable,” he added. “Our strength is in our numbers.”
The Grossmont match came down a three-set battle on the No. 2 line. Madeleine Alper and Mailia Sellers sent MiraCosta to the championship match by gutting out the win.
