A former Muncie, Indiana volleyball coach has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a child. He’ll also serve 7 years of supervised release after the completion of his prison term.

24-year old Nolan Michael Brand was arrested in December after the mother of a 15-year old girl went to police with allegations that he had sex with the girl in September and then threatened to blackmail her. He admitted to police that he’d had sex with the girl more than a dozen times, and his video had videos of the two engaging in sex acts. Messages on the victims phone also confirmed that Brand knew the girl was underage, as he had talked to the girl about her 15th birthday.

Authorities also found sexually explicit pictures on Brand’s tablet of a second victim. Now legally an adult, the second girl said she had been in a relationship with Brand when she was 15 or 16, telling federal investigators that Brand “liked his girlfriends on the young side.” She said Brand had “regularly” asked her to take pictures of herself in underwear or nude.

“I’ll never be able to forgive myself,” a tearful Brand told U.S. District Court Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson at a hearing on October 4th. “I was her coach, someone she trusted and counted on.”

Brand was formerly a coach at Central High School and the Munciana Volleyball Club.
