Montes Claros’ president Andrey Souza has just been elected as president of Brazil’s Volleyball Clubs Association. He has stated that he intends to keep a healthy dialogue with the Brazilian Volleyball Federation, but that he won’t surrender any of the clubs’ rights in face of the many controversies the federation has found itself in. To accomplish this, Souza wants to further empower the clubs (via Bruno Voloch):

“The clubs are the protagonists. Without athletes and clubs there is no volleyball. We have to be heard and participate more effectively in decisions and not be held hostage to the acts of federations that in many cases even lack the financial conditions to foster the modality. Today we only have 2 participating clubs working with the federation.”

This is a tendency in international volleyball, as clubs more and more are trying to distance themselves from their respective federations in order to improve their domestic leagues. Most national federations have political ties with their respective governments, which sometimes is a gateway for corruption and ineffectiveness.

Most recently, French clubs have started a movement in their league in order to make it more analogue to Italy’s and Polish’s professional leagues, which are arguably the most powerful and organized leagues in the world and the bastion by which every competition wants to be measured.
