AMES, Iowa – Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking notched a 21-kill, 18-dig double double and helped the Sooners to a 31-29 Set 1 win, but it was not enough to hold off the No. 19 Cyclones in a four-set loss Saturday.
Iowa State outblocked Oklahoma 12.5 to 7 and outdid the Sooners 67-60 in kills, .256 to .202 in hitting percentage and 2-0 in aces in the comeback win.
Redshirt senior right side hitter Samara West, junior outside Jess Schaben, senior middle blocker Alexis Conaway and junior middle Grace Lazard split the offensive load for the Cyclones, each registering double-digit kills with 18, 17, 12 and 11 respectively. Schaban and Conaway narrowly missed double-doubles, each tallying nine digs, while Schaben put up six blocks. Freshman middle Avery Rhodes put up seven blocks, while redshirt sophomore libero Hali Hillegas managed a match-high 25 digs to lead the backcourt. Senior setter Monique Harris (13) and freshman defensive specialist Izzy Enna (11) also recorded double-digit dig tallies.
Enneking was tops among the Sooners with 21 kills, followed by junior outside Madison Drescher‘s 17 putaways. The next highest kill total was five from both freshman outside Sarah Maras and junior setter Morgan Miller. Maras accounted for a team-best four blocks, while Enneking paced the defense with 18 digs. Senior libero Emma Kelly (13), freshman defensive specialist Kira Morikawa (13) and redshirt junior defensive specialist Rachel Manriquez (12) followed.
Iowa State worked its way to an 8-5 lead in Set 1, behind three OU errors and three Conaway kills. After a tie at 8-all, the Cyclones turned in seven of the next eight points, including back-to-back-to-back West kills and a Schaben ace to go up 15-9. Oklahoma answered with a 8-2 run of its own to steal an 18-17 lead as Enneking notched three kills. A pair of Lazard kills put ISU on top 19-18, but the Sooners grabbed the lead back at 20-19 on a stuff by Paige Anderson and Drescher. A Schaben kill tied it at 20 and the teams split the next 18 points leading to a 29-all score. OU had its first set point try at 24-23 and four more, last at 28-27, before the Cyclones had a crack at it at 29-28 after a kill by Schbane and a triple block. A Drescher kill, an ISU hitting error and Enneking putaway, however, capped the 31-29 win for the Sooners.
Oklahoma went up 9-6 at the start of Set 2 as Miller downed four kills. Iowa State erased the deficit and cruised to an eight-point lead of its own at 18-10. Two kills and two blocks by Schaben and kills by four other players aided the rally. A Genesis Miranda ace pushed the margin to nine at 22-13. A Conaway kill and a OU hitting miscues gave the Cyclones a 25-15 win.
ISU struck first in Set 3, leading 6-4, only to see Oklahoma surge ahead 8-6 with two Cyclone errors. The teams tied at 8-all, sparking a series of six ties, last at 15, with neither team gaining more than a two-point edge. Two West kills set up a 4-0 Iowa State run, giving the Cyclones a 19-15 lead, one which the Sooners could not crack. OU did cut the margin to one at 22-21 on a stuff by Mara and Drescher, but kills by Conaway and Schaben gave ISU a set-point try at 24-21. Another Schaben putaway gave the Cyclones the narrow 25-23 victory.
The teams split the first 10 points of Set 4. Iowa State went on to a 14-10 lead as Lazard notched three kills and OU committed three miscues. Down 17-11, Oklahoma mounted a comeback, eventually tying the score at 21. Five different players tallied putaways in the run, while Erin Dibble and Drescher notched two kills apiece. After a tie at 22, a kill by West and two Sooner miscues sewed up the 25-22 win and the match.

No. 18 Iowa State opened the Big 12 portion of the schedule with a scrappy 3-1 (29-31, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22) win over Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The win improved the Cyclones to 10-1 overall, 1-0 in Big 12 play. OU falls to 3-11 on the year, and 0-2 in league competition.
The Cyclones needed to step up its offensive production against the Sooners, and was led by a career-best 18 kills from Samara West, while Jess Schaben tied a season-high with 17 kills. Alexis Conaway(12) and Grace Lazard (11) were also in double figures. Monique Harrisfinished with a double-double of 50 assists and 13 digs, while Hali Hillegas had her fourth-straight match over 20 digs with 25. Izzy Enna posted a career-best 11 digs in the win. Up front, Avery Rhodes led ISU with seven blocks, while Schaben kicked in six.
Set One: Oklahoma 31 Iowa State 29
The Cyclones broke open a tight set with a 7-1 run that included a Jess Schaben ace that opened up ISU’s lead to 15-9. The Sooners battled back, going on an 8-1 run themselves to get back ahead at 18-17. The two teams kept battling, but OU got to set point first at 24-23, but were denied on its first five attempts to close out the set. ISU finally got a set point chance at 29-28 with a three-player block, but OU continued the set with a kill. On their sixth effort at set point, the Sooners finally put it away with a kill by Alyssa Enneking at 31-29.
Set Two: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 15
OU carried their momentum into the second set, running out to a 9-6 advantage to begin the frame. ISU quickly erased that deficit, with the block stepping up to knot it back up at 9-9. ISU followed that up with a 9-0 run to build up a comfortable 18-10 advantage. The Cyclones rode that to set point at 24-15 on an Alexis Conaway kill, and evened up the match when Madison Drescher fired wide at 25-15 Cyclones.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 23
A scrappy encounter ensued in the third set, as both teams kept the other from pulling ahead via the attack. The Cyclone offense was able to piece together a 4-0 run to get some breathing room at 19-15. The ISU block had a strong set, recording 5.5 blocks to help hold OU to a .225 hitting percentage for the frame. ISU got to set point at 24-21, and put it away on the third asking when Schaben tipped over the block for a kill at 25-23.
Set Four: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 22
The Cyclones fought their way back ahead halfway through the set with a 6-1 run that up an 11-10 advantage to 17-11. The ISU back-row defense was stout, but the Sooners continued to chip away at the Iowa State lead and eventually went on a 3-0 run to tie it back up at 21-21. The Cyclones were able to scrap their way to a match point at 24-22 on Samara West‘s 18th kill, and got it on first asking when Enneking fired wide.

Samara West. The redshirt senior had one of the most productive nights of her ISU career, recording a career-best 18 kills at a .371 hitting percentage. On defense, she helped ISU with four block assists.
