Susan Halverson-Maloney has been elevated to the position of associate head coach for the Ohio State University women’s volleyball team, promoted by head coach Geoff Carlston. Halverson-Maloney returned to life as a Buckeye in August 2015 as an assistant coach five years after graduating from the University in 2010.

“Susan has been with me on this crazy journey as a player, a volunteer, an assistant and now as our associate head coach,” Carlston said. “She has great insight into the game, has been an integral part of our success and I trust her intuition completely. This was one of the easiest decisions I’ll make this year.”

Halverson-Maloney was selected to the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) ‘Thirty Under 30’ list, pegged as one of the country’s top up-and-coming coaching talents. She was the lone Big Ten coach chosen and one of just 12 Division-I honorees.

Halverson-Maloney bookended the prestigious award with back-to-back trips to the NCAA ‘Sweet 16,’ pushing the Buckeyes to the postseason’s second weekend in both years as an assistant coach. Advancing deep into the tournament is old hat for Halverson-Maloney, reaching the Regional Semifinals as team captain of the 2010 Buckeye squad as well. In addition, she was a member of the coaching staff for the 2012 NCAA Tournament triumph over Notre Dame as Ohio State captured its 23rd victory of the season with Halverson-Maloney in the role of volunteer assistant coach.

Since returning to Columbus, the former libero has already put her stamp on the OSU defensive specialists. Valeria León shattered the all-time school record for career digs under the tutelage of Halverson-Maloney.

Halverson-Maloney’s previous two seasons were spent patrolling the sidelines at the University of North Texas as an assistant coach. She and the Mean Green racked up 22 wins in 2014 on the strength of Conference USA Player of the Year, Carnae Dillard. While living in the Lone Star State, Halverson-Maloney also continued her work with USA Volleyball as the Technical Coordinator for the North Point Volleyball Club located in the USA Volleyball North Texas Region. During her prior stint in Columbus, Halverson-Maloney was the System Coordinator (2011-13) for the Elite Volleyball Training Center in the USA Volleyball Ohio Valley Region.

During her playing career, she racked up over 600 digs playing in 117 matches for the Scarlet & Gray.

Before graduating with a Human Development and Family Science degree (specialization in Early Childhood Education), Halverson-Maloney was lauded as an all-around student-athlete, presented both the Corwin A. Fergus Award and Leann Grimes-Davidge Award in 2010. Fergus Award recipients `excel in athletics, achieve academically, demonstrate positive qualities of character and citizenship and show potential for success in a graduate or professional program.’ Halverson-Maloney earned the Grimes-Davidge Award due to `outstanding qualities of athletic performance, scholarship, character, campus or community involvement and leadership.’ She utilized the Fergus Award post-graduate scholarship in her completion of a master’s degree in 2012 (Education with a specialization in Pre-k to 3rd Grade).
