Canadian’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes oust 2015 champion Barbara Seixas and Fernanda Alves in a dominant two-set 2-0, (21-16, 21-10) showing. The win advances the Canadians to the Round of 16, while Seixas/Alves are eliminated from the competition.
Pavan came out as a dominant force on the offensive and defensive end of the match. On offense she put down 13 kills and three aces while also putting up a big block, stopping six balls in the match.
“We have a lot to learn about each other to grow as a team. Canada’s defensive system worked well. They are hard to play against,” said Alves after the match.
The big block from Pavan shook the Brazilian team as they were not able to get around the block, and when they did it was met with Humana-Paredes ready to dig up the ball. In addition, the Canadian put pressure on the Brazilian team with tough serves that were difficult to handle.
The overall errors in the match were low, but it came down to which team was more aggressive on offense.
