Pepperdine Adds U.S. National Teamer Andy Hein to Men’s Coaching Staff

The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team has added Andy Hein to their coaching staff for the 2018 season. Hein is a Pepperdine alumnus that was a two-time AVCA All-American and a member of Pepperdine’s 2005 NCAA Championship squad.

Hein’s last stop was as an assistant with Cal Baptist, a program that the school cut at the end of last season.

Hein played as a member of the USA Volleyball National Team from 2006-2013 and simultaneously played professionally in Switzerland, Greece, Puerto Rico, and Russia. After his tenure with the US National Team ended, he played professionally until 2015 in with Padova Volleyball Club, Spacers Toulouse, and Hypo Tirol in Italy, France, and Austria, respectively.

He won 6 medals in that period, including gold at the 2010 NORCECA qualifier to the World Championships.

David Hunt was promoted to head coach this summer after 34-year head coach Marv Dunphy retired.

“We are excited to have Andy back in Malibu,” said Hunt. “In Andy, we have someone who is of the highest caliber and represents what Pepperdine is all about. He has played at the highest levels of our sport and will add a tremendous amount to our program both on and off the court.”

MALIBU, Calif.: – Head Coach David Hunt hired Pepperdine alumnus Andy Hein to the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team coaching staff, as announced on Friday afternoon.  Hein, a two-time AVCA All-American and member of the Waves’ 2005 NCAA Championship winning squad, joins the program after successful coaching and professional playing careers under his belt.

Most recently for two years, Hein worked as an assistant with California Baptist University, a DI/DII men’s volleyball program.  Also during that time, he worked with the Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camps, Keegan Cook Volleyball Camp, USA High Performance Volleyball Camp and the Marv Dunphy Volleyball Camp.

As a competitor, Hein stood out, playing for the USA Men’s National Team from 2006-13.  After closing his career with the Americans, Hein played in for Fidia Padova Volleyball Club, Spacers Toulouse Volleyball Club and Hypo Tirol Volleyball Team in Italy, France and Austria from 2012-15.

With the national team, he competed in the NORCECA Continental Championship, FIVB World Championships, Pan American Games, America’s Cup and World University Games at least once.  He won six medals during that time, including gold at the 2010 FIVB World Championship Qualifier for NORCECA Group F and 2008 Pan American Cup.

Hein played for the Waves from 2003-06, earning AVCA All-American first team honors in 2005 and 2006 and Pepperdine men’s volleyball’s most recent NCAA trophy in 2005.  He earned All-MPSF honors in his senior and junior campaigns and garnered AVCA Player of the Week status twice during the championship run in 2005.  He led the team in hitting percentage and blocks through three seasons from 2004-06.

The Chicago native still holds three Pepperdine men’s volleyball records and has a wealth of presence in the record books.  He ranks first all-time with a .483 career hitting percentage and ranks first and second for his single-season hitting percentages for the rally scoring era with a .529 in 2005 and a .516 in 2006.  He also ranks first and second in the record books for hitting percentage in a single match with a .909 (10-0-11) against Long Beach State in 2005 and a .882 (16-1-17) against UC San Diego in 2004.

For his career efforts, Hein also ranks 3rd in block assists and total blocks with 482 and 533 respectively and 5th with 1.40 blocks/set.  For his single season efforts, he also ranks 4th with 165 total blocks in 2005, 5th with a .441 hitting percentage in 2004 and ties for 5th with himself with a 1.59 blocks/set average in 2005 and 2006.  He also ties for second with 14 total blocks in a single match which occurred at CSUN in 2005.

Hein graduated from Pepperdine with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2006.  He then went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from DeVry University Keller Graduate School in 2015 with an emphasis in General Management and Finance.

Andy married his wife Kate in 2011 and the two welcomed their first daughter Marilyn in 2016.
