PLAY-BY-PLAY

In the first set, Pepperdine took an early 5-1 lead and refused to let up from that point forward.  The Waves continued to pound down on Gaels with a strong service from Frohling and smashes from Gross, Harris and Lyons for a 20-12 lead late in the set.  A block collaboration from Frohling and O’Harra and a final pair of kills from Frohling helped the Waves to a 1-0 advantage on a 25-18 set win.

Saint Mary’s came out strong in the second set, amassing a 12-5 lead early and building upon that to a 21-15 advantage.  Pepperdine was resilient, however, and a Lyons serving performance along with a O’Harra and Frohling attack front helped the home team tie things up 22-22.  After a 23-23 tie, a block and a kill from the other side of the net gave the Gaels a 25-23 set win to tie the match 1-1.

Each side came out strong in the third, seeing back-and-forth action until a 9-9 tied score.  Lyons then started the work with a smash and Gross continued with a pair of her own to help turn the tide.  Blocks from Harris, O’Harra and Gross, Harris brought the Waves up to a 22-19 lead late in the set.  An ace from Lyons, followed by a smash from Frohling and Pepperdine went ahead 2-1 on the day with a 25-20 set win.

In the fourth and final set, the Gaels pulled ahead 7-4 early on and continued to maintain a gap through the 17-14 mark.  At that time a kill and solo block from Gross, followed by Dyer ace tied the set and the Waves used the momentum to put a 20-18 cushion over SMC.  With a strong final service from Frohling, Gross marked another solo rejection and Harris closed the set with a 25-19 set-winning kill to earn the Waves a 3-1 WCC victory.
