Szczecin has recently announced in its official website that it as signed a new sponsorship deal. The club, which up to yesterday donned the name Espadon Szczecin, will now once again be called KPS Stocznia Szczecin, a throwback to its earlier years, when the club celebrated its greatest glories in the 1980’s. The team will debut its name this Friday against Jastrzębski Węgl. The contract will be in force until the end of the next season, but there is an option to extend it for subsequent years. Team officials said that thanks to its new deal, it will be able to aim for better PlusLiga results than this year’s current 12th place on a 9-19 record.

Here is how team officials reacted:

The team will continue to be led by Michał Gogol and it will be his task to shape up the rosters for the new season. These changes in the budget will not make us start fighting for the Polish championships right away, but I believe that places 6-8 or 6-10 are real. The talks lasted several months, but we are very happy that they have been successfully concluded. Now all I have to do is invite the fans to the Net Arena, because this is the first time we will be able to see KPS Stocznia Szczecin in PlusLiga” – Szczecin’s president, Paweł Adamczak

“This moment, in which the club’s symbolic restoration of the Stocznia shipyard color, is great and historical. I warmly congratulate everyone and I hope that the name will bring the club and all of us much happiness and reasons for joy. I heartily wish you successes and I hope that the next season will be very fruitful.” – Szczecin’s city vice-mayor, Marcin Pawlicki

“It’s a special day for me, I’m very happy. We set ourselves the goal of reviving Szczecin’s volleyball to the highest level and now we are making another important step towards its implementation. We wanted a regional name, so the path we have chosen is completely natural. I believe that with this name volleyball will last in Szczecin for years.” – Szczecin’s owner, Jakub Markiewicz

“The new circumstances make us all optimistic and hopeful. I hope that now – with appropriate support – we will start knocking on higher places in the table. This moment is also exceptional for me also for personal reasons, because my family members worked in the Szczecin Shipyard and I was emotionally involved with it. If anyone wants to make the team proudly represent the city and the sponsor, then this person is sitting here.” – Szczecin’s coach, Michal Gogol
