In the first match of the day, Russia beat Italy 3-1. Afte rthe Italians opened with a first set win, Russia came back and dominated the next 3 to take the match. The team was led by Nataliya Goncharova, who had 16 points on 13/25 (52%) hitting in the match.

Italy struggled offensively. While full team hitting percentages weren’t available, Serena Ortolani hit just 34%, Myriam Silla hit just 36%, and Lucia Bosetti hit just 39% as three of the team’s five scorers in double figures.
