The Maine state championships, classes A, B, and C, were awarded last weekend with familiar faces bringing home the titles.
Class A – Scarborough
Scarborough won its second state title in three years on Saturday, bouncing back from a runner-up finish in 2016. The second seeded Red Storm topped No. 5 seed South Portland (25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 25-12) in the title match. After receiving a first-round bye, Scarborough topped Thornton Academy (25-19, 25-11, 25-23) in quarterfinals and swept Biddeford (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) in the semifinals to reach the championship.
Class B – Cape Elizabeth
Cape Elizabeth (17-0) swept its way to the title, topping Kennebunk in the quarterfinals, Greely (25-21, 25-12, 25-19) in the semis and downing No. 2 seed Falmouth (25-13, 29-27, 25-21) in the championship. The win, the team’s third of the season over Falmouth, secured the Capers their second state title, following a 2014 championship.
Class C – Calais
Calais clinched back-to-back state titles with a sweep of Washington Academy on Saturday. The third seeded Blue Devils swept Jonesport-Beals (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) in the quarterfinals. Calais then edged No. 2 seed Woodland in four sets in the semifinals (25-21, 20-25, 25-4, 25-21). Next up, was a sweep of top seeded Washington in the title match (25-18, 25-22, 25-21).
