Former South Dakota State middle blocker Macy Smith is leaving the program via transfer to continue her volleyball career at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Smith led the Jackrabbits in blocks and blocks per set in 2017.

A sophomore-to-be in the fall of 2018, Smith will have three years left of play after spending just one season at her previous stop. She will also be immediately eligible for the upcoming season.

A 6’0″ native of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Smith was a second team all-state pick at Spirit Lake High School before attending South Dakota State. She made an immediate splash as a true freshman, appearing in 79 sets over 26 matches (25 starts) and totaling 100 kills (1.27 per set) on a .199 hitting percentage, 54 blocks (0.68 per set), 29 digs (0.37 per set) and nine aces (0.11 per set).

The loss leaves South Dakota State, who went 2-25 (0-14 Summit) last year, with two returning middle blockers to their 2018 roster.

In 2017, UNLV went 8-23 and 4-14 playing in the Mountain West Conference. Smith joins a 2018 roster that currently features three players who can fill the middle blocker position – one of which started last season and the other two who were backups as freshmen.
