Southern Miss’ Grandy, Bell Headline C-USA Weekly Honorees

IRVING, Texas – A pair of Golden Eagle seniors claimed C-USA weekly honors as Kylie Grandy was elected as Offensive Player of the Week and Sarah Bell took home Defensive Player of the Week. Ivone Martinez of Florida Atlantic boasted her fourth Setter of the Week selection and Rice newcomer Anota Adekunle received her first Freshman of the Week honor. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World Headwear.

Offensive Player of the Week

Kylie Grandy, Southern Miss, Sr., Rolesville, N.C.
Grandy bolstered the stat sheet for Southern Miss this weekend, compiling two double-doubles and averaging 5.33 kills, 5.78 points and 3.11 digs per set. The senior paved way for a 3-1 victory against Charlotte on Friday as she compiled 20 kills, 13 digs, two assists and a block for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss fell in five to league-topper Rice on Sunday as Grandy notched a career-high 28 kills, the most by a Golden Eagle since 2013. She also contributed 15 digs, two assists, two aces and two blocks in the effort. Now with eight matches of 20+ kills this season, Grandy moved into sixth all-time in the program record books with more than 1,300 kills and leads C-USA in kills per set.

Defensive Player of the Week

Sarah Bell, Southern Miss, Sr., San Antonio, Texas
The Golden Eagle senior manufactured 4.56 digs per set through Southern Miss’ 1-1 weekend in conference play. Bell produced 12 digs and 55 assists against the 49ers on Friday, including five kills on a .455 hitting clip and three service aces. The San Antonio, Texas, native bested her career-high in digs against league-power Rice with 29 on Sunday, the most compiled by a Southern Miss player since 2015. On the offensive side of the ball, the setter placed 51 helpers to total 11.78 assists per set on the weekend.

Setter of the Week

Ivone Martinez, Florida Atlantic, Sr., Mexicali, Mexico
A three-time C-USA Setter of the Week winner this season, Martinez continues to showcase her talent for Florida Atlantic, this time leading the Owls to two four-set wins over North Texas and Louisiana Tech. The Mexico product registered a season-high 62 assists with 13 digs in the victory at North Texas, marking her fifth double-double of the 2018 campaign. On Sunday, she dished out another 57 helpers to facilitate a .352 team attack percentage in the topping of Louisiana Tech. On the weekend, the senior averaged 14.88 assists per set and 2.50 digs per set to help extend a three-match win streak for the Owls.

Freshman of the Week

Anota Adekunle, Rice, Fr., Humble, Texas

Adekunle impressed on all sides of the ball for Rice this weekend. The newcomer boasted 10 blocks, 17 kills, eight digs and 3.12 points per set through Rice’s victories over Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss. The freshman broke out and inked season-highs on seven blocks, 12 kills (.455%) and 18 points at Southern Miss. In Murfreesboro, Adekunle chimed in with five kills on .556 hitting and three blocks.
