Stanford Beach Edges Cal 3-2

Inspired by four-time Olympic medalist and 2000 graduate Kerri Walsh Jennings, who had the No. 1 court at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium dedicated in her name before the match, the Cardinal defeated Cal 3-2 on Tuesday. Walsh Jennings was a four-time All-American for the Stanford indoor team, leading the Cardinal to national championships in 1996 and 1997.

“I was really happy about the responses from our team today, whether it was giving up six points and bouncing back or making calm changes to our game when pressed,” first-year head coach Andrew Fuller told gostanford.com. “It was a surreal moment to have Kerri on the court with us, knowing that all of this – collegiate beach volleyball and the growth of our sport – is a ripple effect from the steps she has taken.”

With the win, Stanford moves to 10-4 on the season, while Cal drops to 10-7.

Stanford won the No. 4 pairing to start the match, as Catherine Raquel and Shannon Richardson downed Iya Lindahl and Nicole Anderson 23-21, 26-24. Cal answered with a win at No. 5 as Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson took a three-setter 17-21, 21-14, 16-14.

The Cardinal secured the win with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Indoor standouts Kathryn Plummer and Jenna Gray topped Jessica Gaffney and Mia Merino 21-19, 21-12 at No. 1. Payton Chang and Ivana Vanjak followed with a 22-20, 21-12 win at the No. 2 position.

Olivia Rodberg and Grace Campbell edged Morgan Hentz and Caitlin Keefe for the 21-19, 16-21, 16-14 win at No. 3 to round out the action.
