Stanford Tops Lees McRae In Four Sets On Neutral Court

Lees McRae pulled a late set win from #8 Stanford, but the Cardinal rolled to a 3-1 team win on a neutral Penn State site.

Eric Beatty had 10 kills and 3 digs for Stanford, and Jake Stuebner added 7 more digs. Lees McRae got 9 kills each from John Sobel and Wes Rogman.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In a complete team effort, the No. 8 Stanford men’s volleyball team defeated Lees-McRae, 25-16, 15-21, 22-25, 25-15, Friday at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.

The Cardinal (10-7) held the Bobcats (5-11) to an .069 attack percentage, the second-lowest by a Stanford opponent this season, while racking up 12.0 blocks. Redshirt junior Clay Jones, who appeared in just his third match of 2017 after sustaining an injury in the season opener, matched his career-high with six blocks to lead all players.

Freshman Eric Beatty led all players with 10 kills, while Jones added eight kills and six digs. Sophomore Ryan Smith hit a career-high .462 with seven kills on 13 swings and just one error to go with two aces. Middle blockers Kevin Rakestraw and Chris Moore each recorded five kills and turned in five and four blocks, respectively.

Junior setter Kyle Dagostino matched his second-highest assist output of the season with 40. The Tampa, Florida native also posted five digs, was 4-0-4 offensively and tied his career-high with three aces. Redshirt junior Colin McCall appeared in three sets and registered three kills, four digs and an ace, while freshman Stephen Moye hit .429 with three kills and two blocks.

In total, 14 Stanford players took the court against Lees-McRae. Junior Jake Stuebner made his season debut, tallying a career-high seven digs while playing libero.

Lees-McRae was led by Karl Deichmann, who notched six kills on .625 hitting, while libero Keenan Freitas finished with a match-best 11 digs.

Stanford will face No. 15 Penn State on Saturday, March 4 at 4:30 p.m. PT in Rec Hall.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Facing its first ranked opponent of the season Friday, the Lees-McRae College men’s volleyball team pushed No. 8 Stanford to four sets (25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15) before falling to the Cardinal at State College, Pa. The loss dips LMC’s record to 5-11 on the season.

Set 1: LMC and Stanford began the first set trading points. The score was at 10-9 Cardinal before they started to pull away from the Bobcats. Stanford went on a 15-8 run to wrap up a 25-16 set victory in the first. Lees-McRae struggled with errors in the opening stanza with 15 total miscues combined between attack, service and receive errors in the first.

Set 2: Lees-McRae responded and played better against Stanford’s offense in the second frame holding it to a .176 hitting percentage in the stanza. However, the difference in the second came via the Cardinal’s play defensively. Stanford notched five blocks in the second to hold serve and seal the 25-21 win in the frame.

Set 3: After totaling nearly as many attack errors as kills in the first two sets, the Bobcats rebounded to hit a match-high .429 as a team in the third. Five different Bobcats had at least one kill. The quartet of Wes Rogman, John Sobel, Mark Shayka and Karl Deichmann combined for 11 kills in 13 attempts to lead the Bobcats to a 25-22 victory.

Set 4: The defense of Stanford regained its form of the second set in the fourth totaling five blocks in the frame. The impact of the Cardinal’s defense kept LMC’s offense in check, which led Stanford to finish off the match with a convincing 25-15 win in the fourth.

Stat Leaders: Deichmann had the best night of any LMC offensive player totaling six kills on eight attempts with just one attack error (.625 hitting percentage). Defensively, libero Keenan Freitas posted 11 digs to pace the Bobcats. It marks the 12th time in 16 matches this season that Freitas has notched at least 10 digs.

Next Up: The Bobcats will take on another ranked opponent Saturday when they take on No. 13 UC Santa Barbara in State College. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
