Oregon pulled off maybe the upset of the tournament in downing Minnesota to finish the year in the VolleyMob Top 10.
Saturday featured 12 matches with the winners earning a ticket to the Sweet 16 next weekend. Eight of the matches ended in sweeps, although two of those provided upsets as No. 9 Creighton and No. 11 USC fell to Washington and San Diego respectively.
With the match tied at 2, and the season on the line, the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team pulled off a gritty win over host Pittsburgh (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 21-25,15-9) on Saturday evening.
Minnesota’s Samantha Seliger-Swenson was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and Co-Setter of the Year, while Penn State’s Kendall White was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Illinois’ Jordyn Poulter also garnered Co-Settter of the Year nods, while Penn State’s Jonni Parker earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors.
Michigan’s Paige Jones, Carly Skjodt and MacKenzi Welsh, Nebraska’s Mikaela Foecke and Lauren Stivrins, and Penn State’s Kendall White earn Big Ten weekly honors.

Minnesota exposed Michigan’s defensive weakness in the match. The Wolverines ranked 13th out of 14 Big Ten teams in blocks/set this season.
Favored teams claimed Big Ten victories on Friday night. 4th-ranked Penn State, 3rd-ranked Minnesota, 6th-ranked Wisconsin and 21st-ranked Purdue all secured wins to continue their win streaks.
It was a match of runs, with the teams trading late rallies over the first four sets. In the end, Wisconsin was too strong from start to finish in Set 5 to claim the road victory and hand Michigan just its second home loss of the season.
