Saturday featured 12 matches with the winners earning a ticket to the Sweet 16 next weekend. Eight of the matches ended in sweeps, although two of those provided upsets as No. 9 Creighton and No. 11 USC fell to Washington and San Diego respectively.
For the second consecutive season, the Pitt volleyball team (27-1, 15-1 ACC) clinched at least a share of the ACC Championship with a 3-1 win at Florida State (17-9, 13-3 ACC) Friday night at Tully Gym.
8th-ranked Pittsburgh, Miami, Notre Dame and Duke continued their upticks with ACC victories Saturday night. Clemson, Georgia Tech and RV Louisville also picked up wins to get back on track.
Pittsburgh stayed perfect on the year and in ACC play with a quick sweep of Notre Dame on Friday behind double-digit kill tallies by Nika Markovic (16), Layne Van Buskirk (14) and Kayla Lund (10).
8th-ranked Pittsburgh, which remains perfect on the season with a 19-0 mark, and Louisville, which is receiving votes this week, are locked atop the ACC volleyball standings with 7-0 records. The Panthers swept past North Carolina, while the Cardinals topped Virginia Tech in straight sets Friday night.
Virginia put up 12 blocks, but that did little to stop Pittsburgh from rolling to its 12th straight win of the season.
The favorites came out on top on Day 1 of the Panther Invitational with No. 13 Pittsburgh winning twice and No. 12 Washington hanging on for a five-set win over Dayton.
Both Cal Poly and Pittsburgh entered the final match of Day 1 at the Pitt Panther Challenge with a win under their belts, but in the end, it was the home side that came out 2-0.
