For the second time in school history, the No. 20 TCU beach volleyball team will play the top four teams in the nation in consecutive matches when the Horned Frogs travel to Manhattan Beach, California, for the East Meets West Challenge Saturday and Sunday hosted by UCLA at Manhattan Beach Pier.
The Horned Frogs (3-4) will face No. 3 Hawaii (1:30 p.m.) and No. 1 Pepperdine (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday before closing out the challenge on Sunday with No. 2 and three-time defending national champion USC (3 p.m.) and No. 4 UCLA (5 p.m.).
In 2015, the first year of the TCU beach program, the Horned Frogs met No. 2 Pepperdine, No. 4 Florida State, No. 3 USC and No. 1 Hawaii in California.
The Horned Frogs have faced the No. 1 team in the nation two other times: USC (April 16, 2016; L, 5-0) and Hawaii (March 15, 2015; L, 5-0).
LAST TIME OUT
The Horned Frogs concluded the home portion of their 2018 home slate with the Fight in the Fort where they dropped matches to No. 8 Cal Poly (4-1), No. 18 Tulane (3-2) and Arizona State (4-1).
Senior Jillian Bergeson and teammate Jaelyn Greene when 2-1 in The Fight to improve their overall record to a team-best 5-2. Avery Arellano and Jensyn Bledsoe went 1-1 over the weekend to move to 4-2.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
No. 3 Hawaii (3-1): Hawaii’s lone loss this season is to UCLA … Hawaii leads the all-time series 3-0 over the Horned Frogs … Last meeting: March 26, 2017; Hawaii won 4-1.
No. 1 Pepperdine (3-2): The Wave’s two loses are to No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 4 UCLA … Pepperdine leads the all-time series 2-0, and the Wave was ranked No. 2 in both meetings … Last meeting: March 18, 2017; Pepperdine won 5-0.
No. 2 – USC: (5-3): The Trojans have lost to No. 4 UCLA and No. 1 Pepperdine twice this season … USC leads the all-time series 2-0 over TCU … Last meeting: April 16, 2016; USC won 5-0.
No. 4 UCLA (5-3): The Bruins’ three losses this season came to No. 1 Pepperdine, No. 2 USC and No. 3 Hawaii … Sunday’s meeting with the Horned Frogs will be the first meeting between the two teams.
