Three Japanese Duos, One Czech Make Tuan Chau Quarterfinals

Tuan Chau HaLong Open One Star

Three teams from Japan and one from the Czech Republic earned free passes to the quarterfinals of the Tuan Chau Open by winning their respective pools on Thursday.

Top seeded Sayaka Mizoe/Suzuka Hashimoto (Pool A), No. 2 Yui Nagata/Minori Kumada (Pool B) and No. 12 seed Yukako Suzuki/Kaho Sakaguchi (Pool D) will represent Japan in the quarters, while No. 3 seed Sara Olivova/Karolina Rehackova of the Czech Republic topped Pool C.

Mizoe/Hasimoto and Nagata/Kumada cruised through pool play with two straight set wins, while Suzuki/Sakaguchi bested No. 5 seed Sofia Starikov/Noy Chorin of Isreal in tiebreak, before winning its final match via sweep.

Olivova/Rehackova had the opposite road, first winning in straight sets, before battling through Denmark’s Maria Elisabeth Tyndeskov/Line Trans Hansen 21-13, 18-21, 15-12 to claim the fourth quarterfinal spot.

Eight other teams moved on to the Round of 12, two each from Chinese Taipei, Israel and Denmark and one each from Sweden and Vietnam.

Two of the eight, Fanny Lindstrom/Sara Malstrom of Sweden and Sofia Starikov/Noy Chorin of Israel started the tournament in Wednesday’s qualification round.

Sofia Starikov/Noy Chorin (Israel) def. Ekaterina Filina/Mariia Kontorskaia (Russia) 21-11, 21-13
