Three San Diego Players Collect 10 Kills in Sweep of San Francisco

The host San Diego Toreros celebrated Senior Day by routing the host San Francisco Dons Saturday afternoon in San Diego. Set scores were 25-17, 25-11, and 25-20. Three San Diego players collected 10 kills each as Merve Tanyel (nine digs), Kaity Edwards and Jayden Kennedy accomplished the feat. Kristen Gengenbacher dished out 33 assists to go along with 10 digs as she led the offense to a .354 hitting efficiency.

The Toreros dominated the match across the board as they racked up more kills 48-23, assists 44-22, aces 6-5, and digs 47-30. The Dons led the match in blocks 3-1.

With the win, San Diego improves to 23-4 (16-1 WCC) and closes out the regular season on Tuesday, November 21st when they host Pepperdine. A win will clinch a share of the WCC regular season title with BYU.

Carly Lowry led the San Francisco offense with seven kills while Nora Buvarp-Lavik chipped in six (.385). It has been a miserable year for San Francisco who falls to 3-27 (0-17 WCC). They will look to salvage their first conference win when they close out the season on Tuesday, November 21st at Pacific.

SAN DIEGO – Kaity Edwards, Jayden Kennedy and Merve Tanyel registered 10 kills apiece to help lead San Diego to its 12th straight victory, defeating San Francisco, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The senior class made the most of their Senior Day with all five – Edwards, Kennedy, Tanyel, Kristen Gengenbacher and Lizzy Tardieu – turning in quality performances.

Edwards, Kennedy and Tanyel led the Toreros (23-4, 16-1 WCC) in kills, while Gengenbacher produced a team-high 33 assists. Tardieu chipped in six digs and two assists.

USD made quick work of the Dons (3-27, 0-17 WCC), defeating them in straight sets, 25-17, 25-11, 25-20. The Toreros have won 20 straight sets and claimed its 19th sweep of the season.

USD hit .354 as a team and were paced by Edwards (.667), Lauren Fuller (.636) and Gengenbacher (.600).

USF took a 3-1 lead to start the match but the Toreros reeled off a 6-1 run to claim a 7-4 advantage and never looked back. Seven USD players recorded at least one kill and Edwards led the team with four. The balanced performance gave the Toreros a 25-17 decision to take a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros really found their rhythm in the second stanza, reeling off runs of 4-0 or better three times. USD jumped out to an 8-2 lead and held the advantage throughout the set. The Toreros ended the set on a 6-0 run to win, 25-11, and take a 2-0 lead into the break.

USD ran into a bit of adversity in the third set when the Dons produced an 8-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. The Toreros responded immediately with an 8-1 run of their own to retake the lead, 18-14. USD finished off the set, 25-20, to secure the 3-0 victory.

The Toreros will look to continue its momentum Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT when they play host to Pepperdine in their final regular-season match of the season.
