USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Open

USA Volleyball will host a Collegiate Beach Open this weekend in Huntington Beach, California. The event serves as the official domestic season finale for U21 and U23 teams.

Included in this weekend’s lineup is 3 teams who will compete at next week’s FIVB U21 World Championships from July 11th-16th in Nanjing, China. That includes one team that straddles conference rivalries, as Stanford indoor national champion Kathryn Plummer and incoming Cal freshman Mima Mirkovic, who graduated college early and enrolled this spring, team up. Plummer at 6’6″ tall will be one of, if not the, tallest player at the World Championships.

Those three Nanjing-bound pairs participating this weekend:

  • Kathryn Plummer (Stanford)/Mima Mirkovic (Cal)
  • Savannah Simo (UCLA)/Torrey Van Winden (UCLA)
  • Clay Messenger/Adam Wienckowski

Marcus and Miles Partain will be the 4th team to represent the USA at U21 Worlds, but aren’t participating in this weekend’s open.

16 teams of each gender will play in this weekend’s tournament, with 4 pools of 4 teams. The pools are used exclusively for seeding of a 16-team single-elimination tournament. Pools will be completed on Thursday, with round-of-16 and quarterfinals on Friday, and then semi-finals and finals on Saturday.
