UCSD, UC Irvine Pick Up Big West Weekly Honors

Victories over ranked teams led to the selection of UC Santa Barbara junior Corey Chavers, and UC Irvine teammates Scott Stadick and Joel Schneidmiller for the weekly Big West men’s volleyball awards.

COREY CHAVERS, UC SANTA BARBARA – PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior • Outside Hitter • Downey, Calif. • Gahr HS

➜ UC Santa Barbara junior Corey Chavers secured his first career Big West Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week award after an outstanding performance in a four-set victory at No. 10 Pepperdine.

➜ The 6-4 outside hitter pounded 24 kills on .333 hitting as the Gauchos earned a 28-26, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23 victory over the Waves.  Chavers obliterated his old career high of 18.

➜ Chavers put away nine kills in the decisive fourth set.  He had nine errors in 45 swings.

➜ Led the team with two service aces and added two digs.

➜ Only fourth Gaucho of the Rick McLaughlin era (since 2009) with 24 kills in a match, joining All-American Jeff Menzel and Gaucho icons Cullen Irons and Jacob Delson.

SCOTT STADICK, UC IRVINE – DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore • Middle Blocker • Watertown, Wisc. • Watertown HS

➜ UC Irvine sophomore Scott Stadick garnered his second Big West Men’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week accolade with big efforts on both sides of the net.

➜ The 7-foot-0 middle blocker averaged 2.38 kills and 1.63 blocks per set while hitting .500 (19-3-32) as the Anteaters dispatched NJIT in three sets and outlasted No. 13 Grand Canyon in five sets.

➜ Stadick led the Anteaters with nine kills and a season-high seven total blocks against NJIT.  He then recorded a season-high 10 kills with a team-high six blocks in the Grand Canyon contest.

➜ He has had five or more blocks in all but one match this season.  Hit .529 (10-1-17) against Grand Canyon.  Also had two aces for the week.

JOEL SCHNEIDMILLER, UC IRVINE – FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

➜ UC Irvine outside hitter Joel Schneidmiller notched his first career Big West Men’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honor with a key performance against Grand Canyon.

➜ The Anteaters pulled out the 22-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 15-13 road victory over No. 13 Grand Canyon aided by Schneidmiller’s five kills in six swings without an error (.833).

➜ Schneidmiller had three kills in three attacks in the must win fourth set.

➜ He added a kill and a block assist in the decisive fifth set as No. 6 UCI improved to 6-1 on the year.
