Ukraine Wins Four Beach Volleyball Medals at Deaflympics

Duos from Ukraine took gold and silver and a Russian team won bronze in the men’s beach volleyball championship at the Deaflympics. The Ukraine also took gold and bronze on the women’s side, with Lithuania grabbing silver.

The Deaflympics have been contested every four years since 1924 except during World War II. Deaflympians must have hearing loss of at least 55 decibels in their better ear. Hearing aids, cochlear implants and other aids are not allowed in the competition.

The Deaflympics beach volleyball competition featured 78 athletes from 18 countries. Teams from Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Venzuela  battled for the beach volleyball title, which has been awarded since 2005.

 

Men’s Gold Medal match

Mykola Tsapkaleno/Anton Koshkarov (Ukraine)  def. Dmytro Donchenko/Serhii Tarasov (Ukraine) 21-12, 21-15

 

Men’s Bronze Medal match

Rushan Dayanov/Maxim Nikolaevich Selyutin (Russia) def. Evgeny Kirillov/Ruslan Afanasyev (Russia) 21-19, 22-20

 

Women’s Gold Medal match

Anna Zatylkina/Raisa Rylova (Ukraine) def. Birute Aleknavicuite/Ingrida Milkintaite (Lithuania) 23-21, 21-15

 

Women’s Bronze Medal match

Yuliia Iaroshevska/Yuliia Chernenko (Ukraine) def. Elizaveta Alexeeva/Elena Kharchevnikova (Russia) 21-11, 21-19
