Volleyball Canada Names 14 for 2017 Pan Am Cup

Volleyball Canada has named its 14-player roster for the 2017 Pan Am Cup, which Canada will host in Gatineau, Quebec beginning next week. The young roster is a very different one from the one that took bronze in the 2017 FIVB Men’s World League 2 weeks ago – the country’s highest-ever finish in that tournament. In fact, none of the 14 players heading to the Pan Am Cup were on that roster in Curitiba, Brazil.

Instead, this roster has been specifically formed and training together for months in preparation for this tournament – which will be their only of the summer.

“We have a fairly youthful group of players on this developmental team with the exception of senior team veteran Max Burt,” said Canada’s coach Larry McKay. “Eleven of our players came out of our university leagues in 2017 (including two each from McMaster, UBC and Trinity Western). A typical Team Canada men’s volleyball group, these players have put in many months, weeks, days and hours training together. We are looking forward to playing against these experienced national teams here at home in Gatineau.”

The roster will include Trinity Western’s Ryan Sclater, who was named the 2017 U Sports Player of the Year in men’s volleyball

Canada plays in Pool B of the preliminary round against Argnetina, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Pool A includes Cuba, Dominican Republic, United States, and Mexico.

The winner of each pool advance directly to the semifinals, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams in each pool will play their opposite (2A vs. 3B, 2B vs. 3A) in the quarterfinals.

Cuba has won 2 of the last 3 editions of the tournament, while the Americans are the winningest team with 5 titles.

The Senior A team will resume their representation of Canada in August in a tournament in Poland and then later play at the NORCECA Championship in the U.S. later in the summer.
