The loss of head coach Steve Aird to Indiana is causing some roster shuffling with the Maryland volleyball program, as they’ve now lost yet another player to transfer. The newest loss for the team, Samantha Dreschel, will join Washington for 2018.
A 6’4″ outside hitter and opposite, Dreschel was a true freshman in 2017. That will make her a sophomore next fall with three years left of play. Since she is changing conferences, it would appear likely that she garners immediate eligibility – although that is not confirmed at the moment.
A native of Bothell, Washington, Dreschel heads back to her home state where she attended Cedar Park Christian High School. She went on to earn Under Armour First Team All-American in 2016 prior to leaving for Maryland.
As a freshman in 2017, Dreschel recorded 211 kills (1.94 per set) while hitting .161, 61 digs (0.56 per set), 57 blocks (0.52 per set) and 12 aces (0.11 per set).
Dreschel now joins libero Kelsey Wicinski (transferring to Florida State) and outside hitter Gia Milana (transferring to Baylor) as athletes leaving Maryland for a new school. The Terrapins are fresh off a bit of a breakout season in which they barely missed the NCAA Tournament at 18-14 overall, but now with the loss of a head coach and three transfers, Maryland is in a tough position.
From old to new, Dreschel’s new school – Washington – went 25-8 last season. They had six outside hitters and zero opposites on the roster and will be looking for Dreschel to slide into an early role as the Huskies graduate three outside hitters from 2017.
