Russia has been a force to be reckoned with at the 2017 CEV European Women’s Champions, as they went 3-0 in pool play just hours after their head coach was fired. The Russian crew will take on a struggling Turkey team in the quarterfinals.
Though Russia was dominant in their pool play matches, they still had to go five sets in two of their matches – the Ukraine and Bulgaria, their other match went four with Turkey. Therefore, these two teams have met already in the tournament, with Russia seeking out a second win. Nataliya Goncharova has posted 60 points for the Russians and will need her to continue producing come the match against Turkey.
Turkey, on the other hand, went 1-2 in pool play, winning only against the Ukraine on the final day in four. They had a playoff match against Poland to which they won in four sets. The Turkish side has been led by Neriman Ozsoy with 74 total points to rank ninth overall. They will need to play tough the entire match to stay on top of the Russian crew.
