VCU registered a sweep of George Washington and Western Kentucky blew past UAB to become the first two teams nationally to reach the 20-win plateau.
VCU bested GW with help from 12.5 blocks and a balanced offensive attack featuring five players with four of more kills. Sophomore opposite Gina Tuzzolo led the way with nine putaways and three blocks. Sophomore middle Jasmin Sneed downed a match-high eight blocks, while senior libero Rebekah Strange notched a team-best 17 digs and two aces.
The Rams have won 17 straight matches dating to September 1. This is VCU’s first 20 win season since 2013, when the Rams went 26-8 including a 11-3 league mark. Head coach Jody Rogers, who is in her fifth season with the team, recorded her 500th career victory last week and has led her teams to winning records in 17 of the past 18 seasons.
Western Kentucky held UAB to a .009 hitting effort in a Conference USA sweep. The Lady Toppers hit at a .281 clip and notched seven blocks in the victory. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Cavanaugh and junior outside Taylor Dellinger put down nine kills apiece. Dellinger hit at a .444 clip, while freshman middle Kayland Jackson and junior middle Rachel Anderson put up three blocks apiece. Senior right side Sydney Engle pulled up a team-best nine digs.
The Lady Toppers have notched 16 straight wins dating to Sept. 2. WKU has posted three straight 30-win seasons: 30-3 in 2016, including a 14-0 mark in C-USA play; 32-4 in 2015 with a 15-1 league mark; and 30-6 in 2014, 15-1 conference. The program has 18 straight 20 win seasons under coach Travis Hudson.
