The University of Wisconsin has extended the contract of head coach Kelly Sheffield through January 31, 2022. Sheffield, who was announced as head coach on December 28th, 2012, was originally signed to a 5 year contract as the 10th head coach in program history. That contract has been extended for an additional 4 seasons.

In his first 4 seasons at Wisconsin, Sheffield has a combined record of 114-25 (.820), including 16 wins in the NCAA tournament. Wisconsin made it to the elite 8 of the 2016 NCAA tournament before running into the hottest team in the country Stanford and lost 3-2. Stanford went on to win the NCAA tournament.

Sheffield’s arrival was marked by an immediate 11-win improvement in the 2013 season from the year prior, and eventually advancing to the NCAA Championship game. A year later, Wisconsin won the 2014 Big Ten title (19-1 mark) and he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. The team wound up advancing to the Elite 8 that year.

In 2015, year 3 of Sheffield’s tenure, Wisconsin was 16-4 in the conference and made the Sweet 16 for the third-straight season.

Prior to Wisconsin, Sheffield had stops as the head coach at Dayton for 5 seasons and at Albany for 7. He also had brief stops at Clemson (2000), Virginia (1998-1999), and Houston (1997) as an assistant coach.

2017 has the potential to be another rebuilding year for the Badgers. They graduate 4 seniors, including the top setter in the nation Lauren Carlini, but bring in a stacked freshman class that will be tasked with contributing in a hurry.
