HOW IT HAPPENED
#1 BYU was challenged Friday night on the road by West Coast Conference foe, San Diego. But after dropping the second set, its first set in conference play, the Cougars cruised in the third and fourth to remain undefeated.
The first set went back and forth early. With the score tied at 15 apiece, BYU used a 4-0 run to seize control and take a 19-15 lead. San Diego kept it close, cutting the lead to two at 22-20, but the Cougars scored three of the final four points to take the opening set, 25-21.
It wasn't easy, but No. 1 got it done!

San Diego was not intimidated and blitzed BYU to open the second set. The Toreros jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. The Cougars kept it close, until San Diego used a 9-3 surge to go in front 20-13. The Toreros earned themselves a set point at 24-17 before BYU put together a furious rally. The Cougars reeled off seven straight to tie the set at 24 before a pair of errors gave San Diego the 26-24 win.
BYU wasted little time bouncing back, as the Cougars raced out to a 4-1 lead early in the third. After a kill by Torero outside hitter Roxie Wiblin cut the lead to 14-12, a 4-0 run put BYU back in control at 18-12. The Cougars closed the set out with another 4-0 run, taking advantage of an ace and a pair of Torero errors to grab the third, 25-16.

With a 2-1 lead, BYU dominated San Diego in the fourth set. The Cougars jumped out to a 10-3 lead early and then finished the match on a 12-4 run to take the stanza, 25-10.
MATCH NOTABLES
- BYU was led by outside hitter Roni Jones-Perry, who finished with 23 kills, six digs, and hit .465 against the Toreros.
- Fellow outside hitter McKenna Miller was also big for the Cougars, as she tallied 15 kills and hit .345.
- Middle blocker Megan Jacobsen led San Diego with 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Roxie Wiblin also tallied 10 kills and added nine digs.
- BYU was efficient across the board, winning the battle in kills ( 58-40), hitting percentage (.350-.046), blocks (13-5) and committed 19 fewer errors (34-15) than San Diego.
- BYU now holds a 9-8 advantage over San Diego in the all-time series. The teams split their meetings in 2017, with the road team winning both matches.
- The Cougars dropped their first set since a 3-1 win over Marquette back on Sept. 8.
- The win snaps the Toreros four-match winning streak.
