ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Long Beach State continued their winning ways, moving to 5-0 on the 2018 season with a sweep over hosts Lewis (27-25, 25-18, 25-19). Multiple match- and career-high numbers were recorded Friday night against an overmatched Flyer squad.
LBSU was led offensively by opposite Kyle Ensing with 15 kills on .542 hitting. Ensing was the only 49er to finish in double-digits in kills. Freshman middle Simon Anderson was perfect on the night, with 8 kills in as many swings. Anderson also contributed 3 aces and 4 blocks. Setter Josh Tuaniga ran the offense to excellence, with LBSU hitting .386 on the night due to his 32 assists. He also recorded LBSU’s only solo block and finished with 5 stuffs at the net. Nick Amado led the defense at the net with a career-high 7 blocks. Long Beach recorded their highest total blocks on the young season with 13 Friday night. Outside hitter TJ DeFalco led the floor defense with 7 digs.
For Lewis, their offensive inefficiency continued, hitting only .160 on the evening. Their lone bright spot on offense was Ryan Coenen with 13 kills. The rest of the squad only tallied 18 kills. Setter Matt Yoshimoto ran the offense with 26 assists on the team’s 31 kills and added team-highs of 3 blocks and 6 digs. Libero Jake Walenga also had a team-high of 6 digs.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 2 Long Beach State men’s volleyball received several solid performances Friday night as the Beach earned a 3-0 [27-25, 25-18 25-19] victory over Lewis in Romeoville, Ill. The Beach hit .386 as a team and held the Flyers to a .160 attack percentage.
Junior opposite Kyle Ensing led the offense with a season-high 15 kill-effort, while junior setter Josh Tuaniga dished out 32 assists. Senior middle blocker Nick Amado put up a career-high seven blocks at the net to help the Beach to 13.0 total team blocks, the most they’ve recorded as a team.
Tuaniga, along with senior outside hitter Bjarne Huus, also contributed at the net as the duo posted five blocks each. Tuaniga logged the Beach’s only solo block to go along with four block assists, while Huus recorded five block assists on the night to tie his career-high.
Freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson continued to show what he can do as he recorded eight kills on as many attempts without committing an error for a perfect 1.000 attack percentage. If that weren’t enough, Anderson boasted three service aces and four blocks on the night.
The two teams played each other hard in the first set as the Beach and Flyers battled through nine ties and five lead changes. Long Beach State led Lewis 7-4 forcing a timeout by the Flyers, then extended its lead to 15-9 as Lewis utilized its final timeout. However, the Flyers would not go away as they chipped away at the Beach’s lead and eventually evened the score at 21-21 forcing an LBSU timeout. From there, the Beach and Flyers were neck and neck, exchanging points until they found themselves deadlocked at 25-25. At that point, Ensing gave Long Beach State the lead for good with a kill followed by a Lewis attack error as the Beach claimed game one, 27-25.
After having fought hard for the first set, Long Beach State held Lewis at bay during the second frame. The Beach defense forced the Flyers into six attack errors and a .000 (6-6-19) attack percentage, while LBSU hit .250 (10-5-20) in the set.
Following three early ties, Long Beach State tallied three straight points and never looked back. Once ahead 8-5, the Beach held the led for the remainder of the set and cruised to a 25-18 victory.
With a 2-0 set lead, Long Beach State hit .462 (13-1-26) in the third set and, following six early ties, jumped out in front with an Anderson kill which sparked three straight points for the Beach. LBSU held a comfortable lead from there went on to win 25-19, completing the sweep.

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 11 Lewis University men’s volleyball team fell to No. 2 Long Beach State 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-19) Friday (Jan. 12) in a nonconference match at Neil Carey Arena.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) paced the Flyers with 13 kills, while Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) added nine kills. Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 27 assists and six digs and Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) added six digs.
LBSU hit .386 for the match (43 kills, 11 errors, 83 attempts), while Lewis hit .160 (31-18-81).
“Long Beach really controlled the ball well tonight,” Lewis head men’s volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “I thought our guys battled hard and created some opportunities but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
After a 4-4 start to the opening set, Long Beach went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead and led by as many as seven points in the set at 17-10.
But the Flyers battled back, scoring the next five points, capped by a Yoshimoto ace, to make it 17-15.
LBSU had a 20-16 lead when the Flyers answered again with five of the next six points to tie the match at 21-21.
Lewis took a 23-22 lead after an attack error, but Long Beach scored the next two points to gain set point. From there Lewis held off a pair of set points before LBSU finished off the set.
The second set started similar to the first, as Lewis held a 4-2 lead before Long Beach went on a 6-1 run to take an 8-5 lead.
Lewis came back to tie the match 9-9 before Long Beach scored five straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Flyers got back to within one at 15-14 but LBSU finished the match on a 10-4 run.
The third set was tied 7-7 when Long Beach went on a three-point run to take a 10-7 lead. It was a 15-12 score when LBSU went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 23-15.
