#12 Bruins Battle to Take #22 San Diego in Five

SAN DIEGO — The UCLA Bruins pulled off the victory in five sets over the San Diego Toreros in a non-conference match-up on Sunday evening in Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Bruins are now 10-1 all-time against the Toreros.

The Toreros took charge in the beginning, taking the first set 25-21, but let up in the second set to lose 25-17. The Bruins would go on to dominate in set 3, 25-13. The Toreros did not let up, and took set four before losing the fifth 11-15. UCLA hit .197 in the match while holding their opponents to .151.

The Bruins led in aces (6-3) and blocks (22-13). This is the most blocks the Bruins have recorded in a single match since 2007.

Mac May led the Bruins to the win with 14 kills on 49 swings with nine errors for a .3102 hitting clip along with four digs and an ace, while Madeleine Gates added in another 13 kills on 27 swings with three errors to end the night with a .370 hitting performance to go along with an impressive nine blocks. Jenny Mosser made her presence known with 13 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.

Devon Chang produced 52 assists and 16 digs for another Bruin double-double while Savvy Simo scooped up a team-high 20 digs.

For the Toreros, Lauren Fuller and Kaity Edwards put away 12 kills each on .078 and .208 clips, respectively. Fuller also tabbed 15 digs for a double-double. Anna Newsom dished out 33 assists to go with 11 digs for a double-double. Kelli Barry took control of the back row with a match-high 23 digs.

The Bruins will head to San Luis Opispo for their next matches to take on Cal Poly on Thursday and Friday at 7 P.M. PST.
