The 20th ranked Iowa State Cyclones finished the regular season in style by sweeping the visiting Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday after in Ames, Iowa. Set scores were 25-20, 25-20, and 25-15. Grace Lazard led the Cyclones with 12 kills while Samara West chipped in 10. Setter Monique Harris dished out 38 assists to go along with 16 digs as the Cyclones improved to 21-6 (11-5), finishing in a tie for third place in the Big 12. Iowa State now waits to hear their fate for the NCAA Tournament. 

The Cyclones dominated the box score, leading the match in hitting percentage .248 to .132, kills 46-35, aces 4-2, assists 43-33, blocks 7-6, and digs 74-57.

Emily Hill led the Red Raiders with 11 kills and four blocks while Missy Owens handed out 28 assists to go along with 16 digs. Texas Tech finished the year at 15-14 (4-12 Big 12) and is a long shot to earn a postseason berth.

AMES, Iowa – No. 22 Iowa State closed out the regular season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15) win over Texas Tech Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The win moved the Cyclones to 21-6 for the season, 11-5 in Big 12 play, while TTU is now 15-14 overall, 4-12 in league play.

ISU’s win, combined with Kansas’ loss to West Virginia, put the Cyclones in a tie for third in the conference standings at 11-5. This marks the ninth-straight season ISU has finished third or better in the Big 12.

Iowa State was led by Grace Lazard, who recorded 12 kills, while Samara West had 10 kills at a .381 hitting percentage. Monique Harris had a double-double of 38 assists and 16 digs, while Jess Schaben had a career-best 23 digs in the win.

First Set: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 20
Iowa State ran off the first four points of the set and did not look back from there. TTU was able to narrow the ISU lead down to a pair at 10-8, but the Cyclones went on a 4-1 run that put the Red Raiders behind for good. The Cyclone block stifled the Tech attack, holding the visitors to a .096 hitting percentage with 4.0 total blocks on the set. Iowa State moved ahead 1-0 when Samara West found the back line with a kill at 25-20 ISU.

Second Set: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 20
The Cyclones found some breathing room in a tight set with a 3-0 run that advanced their lead to 12-7 halfway through the set. The TTU offense was playing better, finding spots in and around the ISU defense to score some points. The Red Raiders were able to bring the ISU lead down to two points on multiple occasions, but Iowa State was able to string together a 6-1 run to break open the frame again. ISU made it 2-0 when West put down another kill at 25-20 Cyclones.

Third Set: Iowa State 25 Texas Tech 15
The third frame was tied at 10-10, but Iowa State went on a 3-0 run to reach an insurmountable advantage for the rest of the set. The Cyclones then got a big 6-0 run on the serve of senior Genesis Miranda to bring the final set of the regular season home. Grace Lazard, Avery Rhodes and Jess Schaben all got four kills in the frame for the Cyclones. ISU wrapped up the match when Missy Owens dumped a shot wide at 25-15 Cyclones.

Genesis Miranda. The senior’s final match at Hilton Coliseum saw her get an ace and a dig, but it was following the match that her special moment came. Following the Senior Day ceremony, Miranda received multiple special messages on the video board from friends and family back home in Puerto Rico, before her boyfriend, Joel Huertas, proposed to her on the court. Miranda said yes.

AMES, Iowa – The Texas Tech volleyball team closed its regular season with a straight-set loss at No. 22 Iowa State Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

The Red Raiders (15-14, 4-12) finish the regular season above .500 for the first time since 2001 and will learn their postseason fate during Sunday’s NCAA and NIVC selection shows. Tech wraps up the year in a tie for sixth in the league standings, its highest finish since 2001.

Iowa State (21-6, 11-5) outhit the Red Raiders .250 to .136 on its way to the 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 victory. Cyclone Samara West celebrated her senior day with 10 kills on .474 hitting, while junior Grace Lazard recorded a match-high 12 kills.

Tech was led by sophomore Emily Hill‘s double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Katy Keenan led the team with a .333 hitting percentage on her eight kills.

Setter Missy Owens also had a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs. The junior surpassed 1,000 assists for the season and now has back-to-back 1,000 assist seasons after recording 1,225 in 2016 at Long Beach State.

Defensively, junior Reyn Akiu got the nod at the libero position and responded with a team-high 17 digs and four assists. Hill supplemented her double-double with a team-high four blocks, including one solo block, to match her career high.

POST-GAME NOTES
Sophomore Emily Hill led Tech in kills for a team-leading 13th time this season.
Saturday was Hill’s 21st double-digit kill performance in 2017 and her 12th in Big 12 play.
Hill leads the team with 11 double-doubles, earning eight of those in Big 12 play.
Setter Missy Owens eclipsed 1,000 assists for the season Saturday. It’s her second straight 1,000-assist season after recording 1,225 in 2016 at Long Beach State.
Owens is now up to nine double-doubles on the year and 24 for her career.
Tech moves to 20-27 all-time against Iowa State and 10-13 in Ames.
