#25 San Diego Sweeps LMU with #8 BYU on Tap Saturday

The #25 San Diego Toreros made short work of Loyola Marymount, sweeping the visiting Lions in straight sets behind 13 kills from senior opposite Jayden Kennedy. The Toreros now look forward to a Saturday battle for WCC supremacy when they host the #8 BYU Cougars in a live-streamed match.

In addition to Kennedy’s contributions, the Toreros were led by Kristen Gengenbacher (38 assists, 7 digs) and a career-high 17 digs from senior libero Lizzy Tardieu.

The Lions recorded six aces in the three-set loss, including three from sophomore setter Jessie Prichard. Offensively, sophomore outside Megan Rice led the visitors with 12 kills.

“We are proud of how our team competed tonight,” first-year head coach Aaron Mansfield said. “San Diego is a good team and played a pretty smooth match. We had some easy opportunities that we weren’t able to score on that could have helped us gain more momentum. We will continue to learn and get better from our experience tonight.”

The first set featured eight ties before San Diego broke a 20-20 deadlock by scoring score five of the set’s final seven points. The Toreros led wire-to-wire in the second, hitting at a .361 clip for the frame. The third was all San Diego as well and the home team completed the sweep with a 25-20 set victory.

Loyola Marymount hosts St. Mary’s on Thursday before taking on Pacific at home on Saturday, while San Diego welcomes #8 BYU to the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday.

Toreros tame Lions with 3-0 sweep

USD has nine sweeps on the season

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Playing in front of a national television audience, the 17th ranked USD Volleyball (10-3, 3-0) team swept LMU 3-0 Tuesday evening. Jayden Kennedy led the Toreros with 13 kills, helping the Toreros earn their ninth sweep of the season (25-22, 25-22, 25-20).

The Toreros had a hitting percentage of .310 and Kaity Edwards (9), Addie Picha (7), Roxie Wiblin (7) and Lauren Fuller (7) all had seven or more kills. Kristen Gengenbacher had 38 assists and seven digs, while Lizzy Tardieu had a career-high 17 digs.

USD held the Lions to a .208 hitting percentage and had 44 digs to LMU’s 37. LMU was led by Megan Rice’s 12 kills.

The first set was tightly-contested and featured eight ties. The match was 20-20 at one point, but the Toreros rallied to score five of the last seven points.

The Toreros’ had their highest hitting percentage in the second set (.361) and never trailed. In the third set, USD held the Lions to a .083 hitting percentage.

The Toreros have a huge match on Saturday when they host the No. 9 BYU Cougars at noon for “Pack the Pavilion Day.”

#17 San Diego Sweeps LMU

The Lions Suffered A Sweep At The Hands Of #17 San Diego On Tuesday Night.

Playing on the road at #17 San Diego (10-3, 3-0 WCC) on Tuesday night, LMU (7-6, 0-2 WCC) suffered a sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 from the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match was televised nationally on ESPNU and WatchESPN.

LMU continued to serve the ball well in the setback, collecting six aces, including three from sophomore setter Jessie Prichard. Prichard also dished out 20 assists as LMU hit .208 as a team. Sophomore Megan Rice collected 12 kills on 29 swings while also managing eight digs and two block assists.

With the six aces served to one ace allowed on Tuesday, LMU has now served up 79 aces to just 39 allowed.

The Lions out-blocked San Diego, 8.0-7.0, but the Toreros hit a strong .310 behind 13 kills from Jayden Kennedy. Kennedy, who also had a block solo and three block assists, finished the match hitting .321. Kaity Edwards also had a stellar day on the attack, hitting .500 with nine kills on 16 swings with just one error. Kristen Gengenbacher set the attack with 38 assists, while also registering seven digs in the victory.

Redshirt-freshman Alexis Morrow had four block assists for the Lions, while Emma Johnson and Meredith Teague each posted three block assists.

LMU will have little time to dwell on the loss, returning home to host a pair of matches on Thursday and Saturday in WCC play. The Lions will welcome Saint Mary’s for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday before hosting Pacific at Noon on Saturday.
