After a strenuous first set win, followed by a second set loss, Brazil #3 seeded Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda ‘Duda’ Santos Lisboa took defeated Canada’s Julie Gordon/Camille Saxton in three. Canada dominated in stats, with 32-23 kills and 7-2 blocks, however, their detriment came in errors, as they committed 29 to Brazil’s 11.
Bednarczuk won the last edition of the Beach World Championships with former partner Barbara Seixas and looks to continue those winning ways with Santos. Santos is an up-and-comer in the world of beach volleyball, as she is set to turn 19 this Tuesday. In her career, Santos has won three U19 and 2 U21 world championships with four different partners, along with the first place finish as the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic’s.
The pair rallied in the first set to win in extra points but were not able to continue that momentum into the second set, with the Canadians forcing a deciding set. The Brazilian’s picked up their play in the third winning by a large margin for a 2-1, (27-25, 15-21, 15-7) win.
The Canadian’s were riddled with errors, though trying a number of shots against the Brazilians. Gordon was the most inconsistent hitting with 11 hitting errors, five of which were out behind the end line. In addition, she tried serving deep but was unsuccessful with seven errors. Saxton used a variety of shots against Bednarczuk/Santos with only three errors. Most of the pair’s serves went to Bednarczuk but she only made three errors. The goal for the Canadians was to drive her away from the net so she was unable to block, but that again proved useless as she still managed to block three balls.
The Brazilian’s went at Gordon on the serve from a number of angles on the back line. Bednarczuk primarily was able to hit the ball from the outside position being successful on 14 attempts. She was able to mix up her shots to be successful, throwing down hard angle and line shots.
Up next, the Brazilians will have just one day of rest, continuing play against the Netherland’s Madelein Meppelink/Sophie van Gestel on August 1.
