2017 EUROPEAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Women’s pool play concluded on day 2 of the 2017 CEV European Beach Volleyball Championships, and 6 of the 8 pool winners snuck through with perfect 3-0 records. All 8 pool winners earn automatic advancement to the 2nd round of the knockout stages, which on Friday will whittle the field down from 24 remaining teams all the way down to just 8 at day’s end.

Among the unbeaten teams in the opening round were Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, who dropped two sets, but no matches, en route to a in in Pool G.

All but 2 pools were won by favorites. In Pool D, Schwaiger S./Schutzenhofer of Austria beat 4th-seeded Betschart/Huberli of Switzerland 2-0 on Thursday to clinch a first-round bye.

In Pool F, 11th-seeded Ukrainian pair Valentyna Davidova/Ievgeniia Shchypkova upset Germany’s 6th-seeded Victoria Bieneck/Isabel Schneider, but only after losing to Russians’ Moiseeva/Syrtseva earlier in the tournament. Moiseeva/Sytseva won the tie-breaker among a group of three teams at 2-1, leaving Bieneck/Schneider to play their fellow Germanys Glenzke/Grossner in the 1st round tomorrow in a #6 vs. #9 matchup.

Bieneck/Schneider struggled at the World Championships as well, coming in seeded 24th and finishing 33rd, winning just 1 of the 4 matches they played in Vienna.

Germany won 3 of the 8 pools – they wound up with 5 teams entered after the defending silver medalists Markets Slukova/Barbora Hermannova of the Czech Republic withdrew at the last minute. Among the winners include Karla Borger/Margareta Kozuch – the team that had to step into Slukova/Hermannova’s #2 seed and still came out unscathed.

The home supporters, with perhaps the most pressure on men’s pair Samoiliovs/Smedins, got a team to support in the women’s bracket as well. The 8th-seeded Tina Graudina/Anastasija Kravcenoka swept their way through their pool without dropping a set. They were one of only two teams to pull that off, along side top seeds Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude of Germany in Pool A.

  • Pool A – #1 Laboureur/Sude, Germany, 3W 0L
  • Pool B – #2 Borger/Kozuch, Germany, 3W 0L
  • Pool C – #3 Heidrich/Verge-Depre, Switzerland, 3W 0L
