Americans Nicole Branagh and Emily Day have had their ups and downs at the FIVB Beach World Championships so far, beginning their temporary partnership with a win over Germany’s Isabel Schneider/Victoria Bieneck then followed by a loss to the #1 seed in the tournament – Brazil’s Larissa Franca/Talita Antunes.
The American’s formed their pairing after Kerri Walsh Jennings dislocated her right shoulder and had to withdrawal from the World Championships. This left the pairing little to no time to prepare for the tournament.
Following the win, the American team was confident in their play in such a large stadium as they have played on the main court in each of their two matches. With such a large stadium to play in, there are new obstacles being thrown at the players on top of the game itself – more people, louder, large screens, etc. On day one, Branagh/Day thought they handled themselves well on the large court, however that feeling changed on day two following the loss.
The mood following the first match against the German’s was more light and relaxed from the two players but after the Brazilian match, it was slightly tenser. With being a new team they have to work through the adversity of the fact that they have never played together before and have the opportunity to do so tomorrow against Austria’s Teresa Strauss/Katharina Holzer. The Austrians are also a newly formed team for the World Championships, therefore, they are in the same boat. In their first match, they nearly upset the #1 seeded Brazilians by taking them to three sets as the bottom ranked team in the tournament.
