2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

USA’s Ryan Doherty and John Hyden were in danger of the Lucky Losers round of the competition, had they lost their match to the Guatemalans, but they were able to roll straight through Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia 2-0, (21-7, 21-11).

The win puts the Americans in second in Pool C, advancing straight to the Round of 32 that will begin on August 3.

“We come out of our pool now guaranteed so we’re happy with how we’ve played so far and hopefully we can keep this going in the elimination rounds,” said Doherty.

Hyden/Doherty were extremely accurate in their attacks against the Guatemalans, with 76% efficiency. They mixed up their shots around the court, finding ways around the block going cross and down the line. The American’s served most of their balls at Leonardo in the match, as he made five serve receive errors.

Leonardo couldn’t get a rhythm going, missing a number of attack off the back line, while Garcia was just slightly more accurate he still struggled to put the ball in the sand. As a team, they hit for 24%, with a total of eight kills in the match.

Leonardo/Garcia finished in fourth place in Pool C, meaning that they are automatically eliminated from the tournament, while the Americans will begin their next round of play on August 3.
