De La Salle University’s team captain Majoy Baron earned the first UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week award of the season, after leading the Lady Spikers to a win in their first game of UAAP 80, according to Abs.Cbn.com. The reigning UAAP MVP had 19 points, including 5 blocks and 2 aces, in the tight 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8) against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses. UST didn’t have its star player, EJ Laure, on uniform, as she was recently ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury.
Baron had to up her level of play in the team’s debut, as La Salle’s starting outside hitter, Kianna Dy, sat out of the game with a hyper-extended left knee. Here is what coach Ramil de Jesus had to say of his star pupil:
“We had to make a lot of adjustments before the game because Kianna has a lot of injuries. Baron played very consistently. She is a veteran out there, so she knew that she had a lot of responsibility in the court. As the team captain, she is the leader of her teammates.”
La Salle’s next game will be against University of the Phillipnes this Saturday. The team is playing for a historic three-peat this season, after winning UAAP 78 and 79.
